How to Age Paper - 6 easy technique to make paper look old

If you want to give a pristine white paper a browned, unevenly-colored aged appearance and parchment-like texture you need to use an aging technique. I love using my own aged paper for my vintage and steampunk projects. It's also very cost effective because you only need a few ingredients to create this effect instead of buying lots of expensive paper.

There are a few techniques to age paper:

Coffee

I'm not a coffee drinker but this aroma filled powder can be much more than just a bevarage, it can be used to age paper and give it a brown antique look. There are two ways to acheive this effect:

Tea

Tea staining will give you a lighter color and more suttle result than coffee. You can use the tea bag itself to stain the paper directly or dip the paper in the tea. You can dry the stained paper in the oven or in a sunny place.

Spray and Ink

Use a blender and a combination of distress inks like wallnut and vintage photo and ink your paper to achieve an aged look. Another technique is to spray the paper with spray ink.

Paint

To achieve an aged effect with paint you would need a few shades of brown and to work in stages.

Here's a really cool technique with shoe polish.

So many fun techniques to try. I hope you'll try at least one, because the effectis worth it! Do you have other techniques or ideas to distressor age papers? Share in the comments!

Top Ten Painting Tips

"If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced" - Vincent Van Gogh

Contrary to what people might think painting IS for EVERYONE and it's much easier than you think. When I say painting I mean the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a surface with a brush but other implements, such as knives, sponges, and airbrushes, can be used. It might sound intimidating to some but here are the top 10 tips that will help you succeed.

1. Supplies
You really don't need any fancy paints, tools or canvases. What you need is simple: a brush basin with clean cool water, paintbrushes (flats, rounds and a liner) in a variety of sizes, and paints in a wide variety of colors.  Here's another tip, if your paint bottle cap is not color coded, add a dot of paint to the paint cap so that you can easily identify the color you are searching for.

2. Changing Colors
When painting with acrylic paints, have a brush basin or container for water on hand.  When you need to change the color you're working with you will want to clean your brush.  Add a couple drops of liquid dish detergent to the cool water in your brush basin.  This will clean your brush quicker. Then it's really important to dry your brush on a paper towel before loading it with a new color.  If you don't dry it, the excess water in the brush will dilute or thin the new paint color.

3. Surface
You can paint on anything: wood, metal, glass, ceramics, canvas, paper mache, terra cotta, cement, fabric, feathers, some plastics, leather and even old cookware.  Find original surfaces like old furniture and suitcases, clothes and any old stuff you want to alter or change. Remember that each surface need a different kind of paint depending on the material and the look you want. Any craft store would help you with that information.

4. Load your brush
Loading your brush properly will enable you to paint with professional looking results.  Dip the brush into the puddle of paint on your palette, flip the brush over and stroke into the same puddle.  This will ensure the brush would not be overfilled with paint which may create ridges of paint when stroking the brush across your painting surface.

5. Painting Wood
When painting a wood surface with acrylic paint, the wood grain will be raised after the first paint layer is dry.  This makes the wood feel rough to the touch.  Sand with a fine sandpaper and remove the particles with a damp paper towel before applying your second basecoat. If you don't have a fine sandpaper, you can use a section of a brown grocery bag.  Simply cut off a section of the bag, fold it in half and sand away!

6. Texture
Create fun textures and looks by using other tools to paint your surface. Use sponge, spray, baby wipe or fabric. Each tool texture will create different texture on the surface.

7. Patterns
Stripes - To easily paint stripes, use stencil or painter's tape to mask the desired vertical, horizontal or diagonal pattern.  Apply paint to the unmasked areas using a brush. Peel tape while paint is still wet.

Polka Dots - Easy polka dotting tools can include: round brushes, handle ends of paintbrushes, daubers, spouncers, toothpicks, a stylus, fresh pencil erasers or even a dead ballpoint pen.

Fun Patterns - Use other tools to create patterns like bubble wrap, TP rolls, stamps, feather etc. Use your imagination!

8. Mess Free
When painting small items stick the small items onto double-sided tape before painting.  Wood beads or balls can be strung onto a small dowel or chopstick before painting.  Your fingers will remain paint-free and thank you for it!

9. Patience
Paint takes time to dry! Wait patiently before painting another coat of paint on your surface! Use a heat tool to speed up the drying time.

10. Brush Cleaning
NEVER allow paint to dry in the bristles of the brush.  Thoroughly clean all your brush after each use with water and soap.  However, if you do end up with a brush with dried paint, soak the bristles in Murphy Oil Soap, then lather and rinse.  Be sure to store cleaned brushes so that they are NOT resting on the bristles.  It is best to store a brush so that it is upright (bristles up) in a cup or container. And here's another helpful hint:  Add a little dry, uncooked rice to the bottom of the cup to help stabilize the brushes.

Hasn't this information just made your fingers tickle? Don't you just want to go and paint something? I know I do!
I hope you found this information helpful, leave me a comment telling me about it or ask me a question.

Christmas Paper Piecing Tag/ Door Sign/ Ornament?

I was asked to create a little project for Christmas that involves paper piecing, which is one of my favorite paper techniques. Paper piecing started as a quilting technique for creating complex patterns, but is now relates to any pattern that is composed from pieces of papers. So I created a tag/ door sign/ ornament I can't decide...

I started with stenciling a large tag with a brick pattern. I wanted to create a scene of a boy sitting next to a window looking up to the sky searching for santa.

Then I stamped a piece of tissue paper with Ann Butler's Faux Quilted Stamps. I simply arranged the 1" square stamps on my stamping block and stamped. looks like a quilt right?
I cut the window frame, window back and an image of a boy, I also punched some stars from a white cardstock I colored with Ann Butler's Crafter's ink.

I assembled all the pieces to a scene. First I colored the white window back with the same inks and attached the frame to it. I added details to the window with a pen. I added the boy and the quilted paper blanket.

Finally I added letter stickers and the punched stars.

So what do you think it is? I think it could be all three right?

Matchbox Vanity

I've always been fascinated by miniatures. The other day I stumbled upon a website of an artist who creates amazing miniature foods. It looks so real it's unbelievable. If you want to check it out here's the link. This has inspired me to create a miniature vanity, my style, meaning paper crafting and paper engineering vintage style.

I created the vanity from 10 matchboxes stacked up together in two stacks. I first inked all the edges and covered the front with patterned paper. I used The Station collection from MME.
Once all the matchboxes were glued together I covered all sides with chipboard so the vanity will be stronger and more real looking. I covered the chipboard with the same patterned papers.

For the embellishments on the top I used craft supplies that I converted into different things that are usually found on a vanity. The photo frames are bezels used to create pendants and jewelry. I cut off the ring of the pendant and turned it into a frame by adding a stand on the back. The mirror is also a bezel with an oval shape. The bottles were created from beads, a large bead for the bottle and a smaller one for the lid.

You should try to create a miniature, it's really fun and satisfying to create something from start to finish and make it look as real as possible. Make sure to watch the step by step video tutorial for all the details.

Mixed Media Art Journal Page: Rain

Sometimes I think I should have been born in another country. Not because I don't love my country but because I don't like the weather! Most of the year it's hot and the summers are the worst. I love the cold, the rain and the snow...
So I thought maybe if I created a stormy art journal page the rain will be here sooner than later...

This art journal page was really fun to create and very easy. The background is all Gelatos with color spray that have a double role - wet the Gelatos and add color. I just layered color on color until I was happy with the way it looked.

Then I added texture with stencils, dimensional paint and gesso. I did it in a cool technique called double stenciling. it gives a great effect of two tone shapes.

Finally it was time to create the dripage effect. I wanted drop of water running down the page like rain. it was an easy task to accomplish with color sprays and a hit tool. After everything was dry I stamped a man with an umbrella on the bottom of the page and added a quote.

Now all I need to do is wait for the rain...

Make sure to watch the video tutorial for all the tips and tricks of how I created all the effects on the page.
How is the weather where you live? Do you like it?

Faux Leather TP mini Album - THE PAGES!

WOW!! I got so many amazing responses. Thank you! I'm so happy you liked this mini album as much as I did. Wasn't it really fun and easy to make? Well...after much anticipation here comes the second part...THE PAGES! We'll venture into these beautiful pages and learn how to create them one by one!

Let's get started!

This album is full of interactive surprises. Pockets, flaps and more... as well as handmade embellishments that will take your breath away. Some of the work is delicate and requires patience but believe me, it's worth it!

Since TP rolls are already pockets, that part is rather easy. All you need for this part is to add tags. I used scraps of paper from Tim Holtz papers to create the tags. To embellish the tags I add a cogwheel or sticker to each one.

The most challenging pages were the corset opening page and the butterfly embellishment page. They took a long time to plan, but you're lucky I've done all that for you already. They do need patience to create but I think you'll agree it's worth the time.

In general the entire mini album took longer to make then I originally thought partly because I tend to try almost every possibility when I design until I'm happy. So I need to work on that... I've managed to edit the video so it will be much shorter but still simple and easy to understand.
Make sure to watch the video tutorial for all those important steps to create all the pages!

I will be happy to see how your mini albums turn out. If you make one please share!

Mixed Media Art Journal Page: STRONG

Lately life is not easy. We are going through a tough time here when rockets are flying and terrorists want to destroy us. In times like this it's a little hard to create but I have come to realize I need to force myself to create because it distracts me and helps me with the everyday stress. The best thing to create, while also inspiring yourself is an art journal page with a quite to empower you.

This is one of those rare times when I started a project with very little in my head. Meaning, I didn't know what I wanted to create and I didn't have a picture in my head like I usually do. I knew what colors I wanted ad that was about it.

From there I just started to create, using my favorite mediums and supplies, basically trying to have fun. working with so many bright colors and an inspirational quote was very liberating and rewarding and I'm really glad I forced myself to do it, it was totally worth it!!

Don't forget to check out the step by step video tutorial: http://youtu.be/aCmb5UjjhFc for all the tips and techniques.
What do you do when you have a difficult time. do you create? does it help?

Thanks for all your support, prayers and love.
