One of a Kind Layout with Blue Fern Studios

So excited to share my first project with Blue Fern Studios! When I was asked to join their video education team I was so happy and honored that I could inspire so many of you with new video tutorials!

So my first project is a boy's layout (what else?) with papers from the Sanctuary line and cool chipboards. In my videos I'll focus on different techniques to alter and cover the chipboards as well as tips and tricks on more fun ways to use them.

In this layout I used the Printer's Bits chipboards both as embellishments and as stencils. It's an easy techniques that creates an amazing pattern on the paper while covering the chipboard at the same time!!

I also added flowers with matching colors and the title. The original title was "One of a Kind" but since my three guys are on the photos I altered the title to "One 2 3 of a Kind" by adding the numbers!

My second project is a small 4X4 canvas. I'm going to create a canvas wall in my studio that will be filled with 4X4 canvases all with empowering, encouraging and positive statements! So here's the first one.

It's basically chipboards on canvas. I used the Directions chipboards to create texture by blending them into the background with gesso and then sprayed everything. Then I wrote the sentence with a pen nib and black ink on top of the texture wrapping the texture around the letters.

Do you use chipboards in your projects?

Valentine's Day Coupons Mini Album - Ann Butler's Designs

Wow! I can't believe January is almost over. I don't know about you but it has flew by for me. Before we'll have a chance to blink Valentine's Day will be here. Here's a little fast, easy and romantic idea for a Valentine's Day gift for your sweetheart or a friend...a coupons mini album! This is a DT project for Ann Butler's Designs.
A coupons mini album is aa album in which each page has a pocket with a coupon inside.

What will be written on the coupon is up to you. You can be romantic, like me, and have coupons for a massage, dinner or xxx if you're doing it for a friend the coupons can be for a movie, baby sitting for their kids or any other gift you know they'll enjoy. It can also be a great idea for kids to give to their friends.

To create the mini album I used an old LYB decorative edged papers and stickers I had. I created the pockets simply by folding the edge of each page and adhering the top and bottom. Then I cut matching cardstock into squares and stamped them with Ann Butler's EZ-De's Flourish ABC's stamp set. I also added some writing with a black pen. I embellished the pages with stickers and scraps of papers.

For the cover I used two matching cardstocks from the same collection. From the first one I cut 2" off. On the second I created a two fold lines 1/4" apart to allow for the thickness of the pages. I binded the album with rings and embellished them with ribbons. I cut black Velcro into a heart shape and added as a closure.

What gifts will you be making for this Valentine's Day?

Mixed Media Art Journal Page: Color

I always thought color is not just color! What I mean is besides being a physical phenomenon of receptors in the eye etc...color is a base for so many things. Color can define us, describe our mood, encourage us or bring us down. it can calm us down or make us scream and it's everywhere! We are so lucky to see the world in colors (unlike dogs...) and we take it for granted up to a point we don't even notice it sometimes. Well...I love color and I wanted to create art about it!

This art journal page is all about the contrast between what is monochromatic, boring, dreary and tired and the brightness, joy and happiness that is color. Even though there is so much texture, shapes and shades in the background without color something is missing!

I created the background with tissue papers and old book pages. Then drew circles with oil pastels and added stenciling with distress ink. all done in black, white and brown. Then I added the word color in letter stickers in different rainbow colors along with some punched stars.

Color your life, add happiness, joy and diversity to everything you do including your art! This was a fun and quick art journal page and I encourage you to try it! Watch the video for a step by step tutorial.

Mixed Media Perpetual Calendar with Blue Fern Studios

Before the age of smart phones and computers remembering important dates was difficult, at least for me. In those days I used to create a perpetual calendar that had the months only and I wrote all the birthdays and anniversaries dates so I won't forget. I decided to create another calendar even though I have all the dates on my phone...

This calendar doesn't end when the year ends. Because it has only months it is perpetual and good for every year. On the front of each page there is the number of the month and on the back there is a place to write all the important events of the month.

I created this calendar with the new Blue Fern Studios paper collection Sanctuary and embellished it with different Blue Fern Studios chipboard. Since the chipboard have very intricate designs I didn't cover them with papers. I used water color pencils and perfect pearls in different techniques.

I also used the pattern paper to cover the Ikea picture frame, I turned the double sided thick cardstock to tissue paper with water! An easy fun technique that you can try.

Mixed Media Art Journal Page: Caterpillar

Sometimes I have an idea in my head and I know exactly how I want my art journal page to look. But sometimes I come across a sentence I really like and my head starts to sound like Waze...reconfiguring...I suddenly find myself with a new idea that I like even better! This is what happened to this art journal page. I knew exactly what I wanted. A page with a winter feel, dark colors and rain, but then I came across this sentence: " Just when the caterpillar thought her life was over she began to FLY" it's a paraphrase of a quote by Barbara Haines Howett and it really spoke to me. Suddenly I saw vibrant colors and butterflies...

This art journal page is a little different because there is only partial background and some of the page is blank. It enhances the flow of the page and the feeling that the butterflies are actually flying. I used a stencil and modeling paste to create the butterflies.

I added color sprays and used a water brush to spread it. I created borders for the butterflies with aquarelle pencils and artist's pen big brushes. Then I added dots and splatters for more texture and pattern. I wrote the sentence between the butterflies.

It's always fun and challenging to try something new and for me, who always cover the page with lots of paint and patterns, leaving some areas blank was not easy. But that's what art journaling is all about...trying new things, stretching the limits, going out of your comfort zone and finding new ways to express yourself!
