Susan K. Weckesser and Unity Stamps Blog Hop!

Hello friends, we are so very excited you are joining us for our first ever Susan K Weckesser
Design Team Blog Hop with Unity Stamp Design Team!

During this 2-day hop, both Susan K. Weckesser and Unity Stamps Design Teams will be sharing Simple Christmas and holiday Card Ideas using Unity Stamps designed by Susan K Weckesser Inc.
You will be inspired and in awe of all the fabulous creations shared by members of these two talented design teams.

So, what did I create?
I created a holiday card suitable for Christmas as well as for Hanukkah (since as a Jew I only celebrate the latter...). Here's how I did it:

1. Start by stamping and embossing a background paper and then mist it with Glimmer mist.
2. Stamp Susan K. Weckesser house stamp, my favorite stamp!, on paper and cut it out.
3. Add bricks with a mask and distress ink.

4. Created the snow on the roof with Mica flakes and some white paint.
5. Adhere the house to the card and add another small house. Add some more Mica snow on the bottom.
6. Punch three stars and color them with Glimmer Glaze.
7. Add a fence and a title. For a final touched ink the edges.

We are giving away two chances to win an amazing prize package containing a generous variety of Susan K Weckesser stamps co-branded with Unity Stamps.

For a chance to win, visit each blog and leave a comment. Then come back on Dec 3 at 6 PM CST to find out if you are a winner at Susan K Weckesser Inc and Unity Stamp Co blogs.

Inspiration Card - Birds

I love birds, they are the symbol of freedom, happiness and joy. The last few weeks made me think about the little things in life. I guess when you are "locked" in your house because rockets are falling outside, you come to appreciate life. I wanted to remind my self that the skies can be filled with other things, beautiful cheerful things...so I made a few bird cards.

BOO! frame

It's always an honor to be featured in Prima's blog, but this month it was something special...it happened twice! Here's another project of mine that was on the blog, the Boo! frame.

This is a frame I created with a photo of my son's costume which was not only scary and great but was one of my favorite costumes over the years. Had to honor it with a special project...
I started by covering the wooden frame with torn inked paper.I added a little mist and paint to it to enhance the colors and the background. I cut my son's image from the photo and added it to the frame as my focal point.

I created a spider's web from black twine by cutting pieces of twine and adhering them in a web shape. I also added a chandelier and flowers.

Now I just need to add the photo to the frame!

Day Dreaming

Another one of my layouts is spotlighted in the Prima blog. This is one of my favorite photos of my son and it really came out beautifully in the layout.

I used a small version of the photo on purpose so I can create a large white space on the layout. That white space gives the feeling of a small boy with big dreams. It's almost as if the dreams are actually floating around him.

I also used masking, inking Glimmer mist and Glimmer glam to create a more rich background for the layout.

101 Flower Tutorial #19: a Rose

Have you started your preparations for the December holidays? Here's a great, easy and fun tutorial guaranteed to teach you how to make beautiful paper roses. It's also a great way to maximize your supplies because you only need a small piece of cardstock!

You'll need a 6 petals flower punch (I used Marvy Uchida) and double sided cardstock.
1. Punch 3 flowers.
2. Flower 1: make a cut from the edge between two petals to the center.
Flower 2: cut out one petal.
Flower 3: cut out two petals.

3. Take the cut out petal and roll it tightly. Adhere to secure and cut the bottom edge.

4. Take the two petals cut out and roll as well but more loosely. Adhere to secure.

5. Close the 4 petal flower (the one you cut two petals from) by adhering its petals. Repeat with the other two flowers.

6. Assemble the flower by adhering all the pieces together. Start from the outer flower.

7. Ink the edges and add leaves.
You can use this rose to embellish everything from your gift tags, cards and gifts to your sitting cards or wreaths.

Home is where the Heart is Farme

Hi dear friends! I'm really happy to share my first project with the Susan K. Weckesser DT, a frame I created from Susan's beautiful papers.
When I saw the adorable house on the Live, Love, Create paper it was as if the paper talked to me and I knew immediately what I'm going to create. The colorful house filled me with warm homey feelings and inspired me to transfer these feelings to the wall!

I liked Susan's papers so much I decided to challenge myself to create the frame from the papers only! I covered two sizes of chipboard frames with paper and created a cluster. I embellished it with all kinds of elements I cut from other Susan's papers and created some of the elements my self. I also used Susan's Unity stamps to add more textures and patterns.

Now all that is left is to add beautiful family photos and hang it on the wall! It would make a great gift for some one...

Technique Corner - White Space

Some people get really uncomfortable when they hear the term white space.Well, there's nothing to it! White space is just another name for empty or almost empty space on you layout. In order to create a balanced layout some of the page must be empty or almost empty or else we'll get really dizzy with all the details. This is a layout I created to show that white space is not that scary!

As you can see on the layout most of the center is empty, there is nothing on the paper. Some parts of the paper only have interesting background that I made with masks but not a lot more. Even the photos are extremely small and don't take a lot of space.

Here are some tips to create white space:
1. Don't be afraid to leave parts of your layout with no photos or embellishments.
2. Make sure to create a balance between the full parts and the empty parts of the paper.
3. If you like full layouts with a lot of details try to concentrate those details only on one or two parts of the layout, leaving the other parts as white spaces.
4. If you're a minimalist then concentrate all your elements together so the rest of the paper will be white space. You can add a little glimmer, paint or masking to the background so your layout will be interesting and with depth.

Maximize your supplies - Masks

When I want to create a layout that is both cost effective and beautiful I always use masks. Masks can be used to create a richer background, add layers for more interest and even replace embellishments. In this layout I did all that!

I used two of my favorite Crafter's Workshop masks and added interest to my background as well as a branch embellishment that really pops.

When you use masks you can choose the color, you can choose where you want it on your layout and that gives you designing freedom. You can use the mask as many times as you want so it's cost effective and versatile at the same time!

2012 (Christmas) LOVE CAMPAIGN

Every year for the past three years Susan K. Weckesser Inc. is having a Christmas love campaign. Being a part of Susan K. Weckesser Inc. DT and a Jew I wanted to be a part of this campaign and show everyone that spreading love doesn't necessarily has to be about Christmas, it has to be about people!

This world can be so hard….. Each day we are faced by natural disasters, family crisis, health issues, monetary problems, and day to day things that just seem to pop up. But, we can ease each other burdens just by reaching out and doing one little kind thing. It always amazes me that when someone seems to be having a horrible day, if you just take a second and smile at that person, and tell them to have a nice day…. well, most of the time, they won’t seem so grumpy anymore!

Hanukkah is all about people too, about great things people can do if they just unite and fight for what they believe in. You don't have to celebrate Christmas to be a part of this campaign you just need to be a human being who cares about their fellow men. It's not the name that matters it's the message behind it! That's why I put the word Christmas in brackets...for me it's the LOVE CAMPAIGN!

So PLEASE join the Love Campaign!
It won’t take much of your time & you will be so glad you did!!!!

There are so many AWESOME sponsors this year and so many still coming….. So that means we will have lots of random contests announced all the time during the campaign! How COOL is that!!!!

Photography Tips - Don't be a director!

If you want good, special one of a kind photos don't be a director! What I mean is don't tell your subject: "sit, stand, move to the right" etc... These photos usually look artificial and even boring.

Really good photos are achieved in one of two ways:
1. Take the photo when your subject is busy or doesn't pay attention. This way you can capture them in their natural authentic state. It works especially well with kids: the best photos of kids are when they're playing or busy doing something.

2. Go to the extreme. If you want to plan your photos or direct your subject add something crazy or funny. This will make the photo unique and interesting and will capture the essence of a person. Look at what my kids decided to take a picture of....me with a plastic bag on my head...I think it's one of my best photos, funny and unconventional..

So next time if you want to take a photo of your family don't have them stand in the room and smile, have them do something like a funny face, maybe jump or even stand back to back if you are more Conservative or feed them and take the photo while they're eating....

Technique Corner - Create a balloon

I love hot air balloons! They are magical, they fly high in the sky and it seems like they carry all our hopes and dreams. Here's a simple layout I created around a hand made balloon.

here's how to create it...
1. Cut 4 circles or ovals and ink them.
2. Fold three circles in half.
3. Adhere the three circles.

4. Adhere them to the fourth circle on the bottom.
5. Cut a small basket from paper, adhere it and add the lines.
