Messages from the past – Fresh paint lo

Passover is all about telling a story, passing it to the younger generation. This way the miracle of God's deliverance will be remembered and history will never repeat itself. Our children will pass it on to their children and so on; this is a story of tradition and continuity. One way of getting into the Passover spirit in our family is spring cleaning which part of it is repainting dirty walls in the house. This is our family Passover tradition and a way for the kids to reflect on the holiday and its meaning.

This lo almost looks like a painted wall. I've used plain cardstock with strokes of white paint on it to resemble the paint on the wall. I added an acrylic house embellishment that was inked, stamped and embellished with rub on and bling. The title is made from chipboard that was painted with two colors of paint.

Messages from the past – Fly, Imagine, Dream - Passover card

Passover is just around the corner and we are all busy with the preparations for the ritual meal – The "Seder". During the meal we read the story of Passover, the story of salvation, of freedom. This is the story of an entire nation of slaves freed from slavery and given a chance to be their own people. That story has a powerful message even today, a message that everyone should be free not only physically, but mentally. We should all be free to fly high, imagine and dream.

We should always imagine the impossible, because only then will we be able to achieve it. We should have dreams, big dreams, goals in life, places to be and not just actual places, but also places in our minds. And most of all we should fly, fly high, reach for the sky, reach for the stars!

Messages from the past: Live Big card

Next week Jews across the world will celebrate Passover. This is the holiday that celebrates God's deliverance of the Jews from slavery in Egypt. It's an ancient biblical story which seems far away and irrelevant, but the messages from the past can still be heard today.  One of the things we learn from that story is (in modern context) to "live big".

Live big is live life to the fullest, all of us are capable of achieving great things! We are all special, talented and worthy. Just like Moses, who didn't think he can lead the Jewish people and couldn't understand why God chose him, but turned out to be one of the greatest leaders in history, we can also live big, and achieve greatness.  Greatness is not necessarily leading a nation LOL, but lead yourself to better things, not to be afraid and move forward.

Technique Corner: Having fun with paper

This is a layout with an old photo of my mom and I titled Cherish. I was really cute once wasn't I J ? I have already started working on my mom's 60th birthday scrapbook, so I try to create a layout every time I find the right materials and mood for one of the photos.

This layout has a few easy fun techniques to have fun with paper:

1.       Cut images: sometimes there are really pretty images on pattern papers that can be cut and use as embellishments. On this layout I cut some roses and doilies.
2.       Add texture: paper is flat but you can always add texture by crumpling it, folding it or creating accordion like creases.
3.       Create different finish: instead of a clean straight edge tear the paper and ink it.
4.       Add height: create layers in different height by adhering pieces of paper with dimensional adhesive.
5.       Have fun with shapes: make paper curls by twisting strips of paper.

A few challenges:

One Stitch at a Time #105: Girly
Scrap Whispers: Sketch #124
Kaboodle Doodles #111: How cute is that?

101 Flowers Tutorial #13: A bunch of flowers and materials

Today is the first day of spring! Nature is waking up, the sun is shining and the flowers start to bloom. Today's tutorial is about creating a bunch of blooming flowers from different materials and techniques to brighten a card or a layout.

1.       Cut a window in your card or layout by creating a horizontal H.
2.    Stamp the background and ink the edges.
3.       Add Flower Soft on the lower edge of the window.
4.       Cut small flowers from a scrap of pattern paper and adhere on top of the flower soft. If you don't have that kind of pattern paper you can stamp on a piece of paper and cut or punch flowers.

5.       Cut leaves from pattern paper and add as well. You can punch the leaves or stamp and cut from paper.
6.       Punch more leaves and adhere.
7.       Add butterflies to complete the springy atmosphere.

Published on Prima: Magic of Creation

Another one of my layouts was published on the Prima blog! This time it's a lo of me when I was so much younger. As you can see I started crafting early and this photo was taken when I was sitting in the garden doing needle work of some kind. I really love this photo and I've used it before on a layout, but I couldn't resist the chance of scrappin' it again.

First I had to print the photo so my image's size will be compatible with the bench's size. Then I cut the image out and adhered it to the bench. Then I created a magical surrounding by adding lots of flowers and butterflies.

Angel layout: finally scrappin' for a girl

As you all know I have two beautiful boys that I love to infinity. I love making lo's with their photos but every now and then I really want to make a flowery, girly lo. My mom is turning 60 in the summer and since I'm really busy I have already started working on her special birthday scrapbook. That means I get a chance to make those flowery girly lo's with my nieces' photos. This is a DT lo for My Punch's Kit of the Month Club and it's full of handmade flowers, butterflies and angels and a cute title.

I created the flags by cutting squares from scraps of paper and punching them with border punch.  I added a string and angel rub-ons that will hold it.

Technique corner: how to scrap bad photos

Everyone has photos that are not exactly good. They are out of focus, the background is too noisy, the angle is wrong etc. Usually these photos find their way to the computer's forgotten libraries or deleted all together. I had three photos like this: there was nothing special about them. There was no interesting background because they were taken in my living room, the colors were different and I didn't really like them. Before I threw them I decided to take another look. I discovered a hidden potential in the fact that all the photos were of my son and they were all kind of funny. I decided to use them in a DT lo I did for My Punch's Kit of the Month Club.

Other than potential the photos had a problem they were boring and other than my son's image there was nothing usable in them. I had to get rid of the background! I did that with an old but fun and easy technique: cutting out the image. You only need to cut out the image you want to use with one important rule: the image can be cut completely without cutting off a leg, changing the hair or anything like that.

Ins(paper)ation: memory layout

Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose. Kevin Arnold

Time is the greatest inspiration of all. It teaches us things that we didn't know, it helps us forget what we don't need and it gives us a wonderful present: memories. Today I want to share with you a nostalgic layout. This layout is with a photo of my grandma and mom when they were both much younger. This is one of my favorite photos to scrap and I have made a few layouts with it already.

The photo was an inspiration as well, not only in the sense of the colors and theme of the lo, but also in the main feature of the lo: the crochet. Crochet has always reminded me of my grandma and mom. I remember the crochets in my grandma's leaving room and I remember my mom sitting on the couch making them.

I love making crochets myself. I can sit for hours making up patterns. I really love the combination of paper and crochet in my lo.

Technique Corner: Rainbow Baby Frame

A decorated frame is a gift suitable for anyone. A plain wooden frame is like an empty canvas, you can put anything on it. This is a cute frame I created for a little baby boy as a present. The main embellishments I used are different sizes and shapes buttons.

Here are a few tips for making the frame:
·         Paint the frame with white wash.
·         Create a punched frame and adhere.
·         String buttons into a thin metal wire to create a rainbow.
·         Adhere its two ends to animal shaped buttons as if they were holding it.

·         Adhere paper clouds to the top edge of the frame. Adhere the animals on top.
·         Create button flowers on circles of paper and adhere to the frame.

·         Add stars and a title.
·         Add another punched frame to the back of the frame to give it background.
